CarProtect FAQs
We want to make sure you know exactly what you’re protected for. Please review our FAQs or reach out to our customer support team for further assistance.
Yes. You must answer all our questions honestly and with reasonable care. The information provided in your insurance application including your proposal form or statement of fact and any renewal applications or other communications with us, must be true, accurate and complete.
Our questions and your responses will influence our acceptance of your insurance, our calculation of your premium and the terms and conditions we apply. If you are ever in any doubt about our questions and your responses, you must tell us.
For further information, please refer to 'Your duty of disclosure', 'failure to meet this duty' and 'General Condition 1. Your Duty' of the policy booklet.
You will have completed your online application and the information you provide us with will meet our standard acceptance criteria. Once we provide you with a quotation, you pay the agreed premium and we issue you with receipt of payment, the policy will start from the date you requested. We will email or post you the details of your quotation and/or policy, outlining the information or documentation you will need to send us.
Unfortunately we will not be able to provide you with a quotation if the information you provide us with does not meet our standard acceptance criteria.
We will advise you by email or post of the information or documentation you will need to send us. Once we receiving everything from you, we will then issue you with your policy pack, containing your schedule, certificate and disc and online link to the policy booklet. The following outlines the main information and documentation needed from you:
Proposal Form or Statement of Fact
This contains the information provided by you and the declarations made by you at the time the insurance was arranged by you. We rely on this information when agreeing to offer you your contract of car insurance and the terms of your policy for the period of insurance. You will need to provide us with your signature and specify the cover start date and time.
Driver licence driving number
Full or provisional Irish licence holders or Irish driver permit holders will have to provide their driver licence numbers. The driver number is a 9 digit number that stays with a driver throughout their driving history. For Irish licences, it is found in field 5 of your paper licence or field 4d of your new plastic card licence or permit (e.g. 123456789). Driver numbers are used to validate your details from the National Driver File held by the Department of Transport.
For all other licences holders we will advise you of the information and documentation needed.
For all licence related queries, please contact the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS).
No Claim Discount (NCD)
If you have an NCD earned in your own name, we will require the original document confirming the number of years NCD earned, the number of claims free years, claims details, matching vehicle registration and expiry date.
Named Driving Experience (NDE)
If you were named on another policy as a named driver, we will require a letter from your previous insurer confirming drivers named, period of cover and details of any claims.
If you were named on a company car, we will also request a letter from your employer.
Important: We may request additional information or documentation from you before we issue you with your cert and disc.
If you want to drive your car in a public place, car insurance is a legal requirement. Failure to have motor insurance when driving is a serious offence, resulting in fines, penalty points and disqualification.

If Third Party Driving of Other Cars is active on your policy, we will provide third party cover for you to drive someone else’s car on the island of Ireland, provided you have their permission and it is not a hire vehicle or in your custody for business reasons. To qualify for this cover you must be aged between 25 and 71 and have a full licence. Section 5 of Your Certificate of Insurance will tell you if you have Third Party Driving of Other Cars under your policy.
You don't need to contact us before driving someone's car under this cover, but you need to be aware of the following conditions.
So long as you are not entitled to cover under any other policy, the cover provided under Section 1. Third party insurance cover will also cover you (but excluding any other insured driver), while you are driving a private car other than the insured car, on the island of Ireland, provided:
1. the other car does not belong to you and minimum insurance for the car complying with the Road Traffic Acts is operative in another person’s name under a separate insurance policy,
2. it is not in your custody or control by reason of your employment or business,
3. it is not a hire or rental car,
4. it is not hired to you under a hire purchase agreement,
5. it is maintained in a roadworthy condition in line with general condition 2 in this policy booklet, and
6. you continue to observe the terms, exclusions, conditions and endorsements of your policy in so far as they can apply.
This extension applies to private cars built for the purpose of carrying passengers, which are taxed for private use, which can be driven with a category B driving licence, and which are driven with the owner’s permission only.
We will not provide any cover under this extension for any vehicle that is not a private car, including but not limited to:
- any van,
- any car-van,

No. If you have purchased Comprehensive cover, you and named persons are only permitted to drive the vehicle registration number recorded on your Certificate of Insurance & Schedule.
If you have purchased Comprehensive driving of other cars as an optional extra, this only permits the policyholder to drive another car not belonging to them for a short period of time. For example, in the case of an emergency or if their own vehicle is being repaired.
Unfortunately, we cannot cover everything – make sure you are happy with what is not covered by checking our Policy Booklet, Features & Benefits and referring to the Comprehensive Driving of Other Cars FAQ for more information.
A modification is any change to the car from the Manufacturer's standard specification. Examples include alloy wheels, body styling kits and exhaust upgrades. You should tell us about these changes, regardless of whether they were on the car when you bought it. If you are uncertain whether your car is modified, check with your local garage. We will not pay for loss of or damage to any modifications on, in or to the insured car, unless they form part of the standard vehicle specification and were factory fitted prior to first registration, or we have otherwise agreed to include them.
We will provide third party insurance cover for towing a trailer attached to your car. Before towing a trailer you should make sure you have the appropriate licence.
You can also purchase additional cover for your trailers:
Detached trailer cover
Provides third party insurance cover for your trailer while it is detached from the insured vehicle
Fire and theft cover
In addition to detached trailer cover, this provides cover if your trailer is stolen or goes on fire
Accidental damage
In addition to detached trailer cover and fire and theft cover, this also gives you protection for accidental damage to your trailer.
The main cover types we provide are:
(a) Comprehensive – gives you wide protection for accidental damage to or loss of your car.
(b) Third party, fire and theft – offers more basic protection, insuring damage to or loss of your car only if it is stolen, someone tries to steal it, or goes on fire.
Third party insurance for injury to others or damage to their property is the minimum cover required by law and comes as standard with both options. It is also possible for cover to be reduced to third party only. This is at our discretion and will be noted on your policy documents if it applies to you.
Medical conditions may affect the safe operation of a vehicle. If you declare a medical condition we may request confirmation in the form of a medical report that it does not impair ability to drive safely.
Please note this does not affect the price we charge.
You must tell us within 48 hours after you become aware of any event which may lead to a claim under your policy, get our approval before you go ahead with any vehicle repairs and follow any other obligations we have set out to you. You must not admit or deny responsibility for any claim made against you, or make any offer, agreement, negotiations, or promise of payment or reimbursement, without our prior consent.

3 steps to sorting your claim - here
Yes. If you would prefer not to use our recommended repairer, we will cover repairs up to the equivalent cost of using our recommended repairer, as determined by our Motor Assessor. However, if you choose this option you won't be able to avail of the courtesy car benefit under your CarProtect policy, as this is only available when our recommended repairer is used.
For windscreen or window glass claims, policy limits apply if an approved supplier is not used (€223 for a replacement, €30 for a repair).
Yes. From time to time claims arise where liability is in dispute. Our aim in all cases is to establish the full circumstances on which to base a decision. If it is found you are liable based on the circumstances provided by all parties involved, your insurer has the right to settle a third party claim under your policy on this basis.
It may be possible to avail of our flexible accidental damage excess options, allowing you to:
- increase the excess and pay less premium, or
- reduce the excess for a higher premium.
It may be possible to increase the excess amounts under your policy to avail of a lower premium, or to reduce the excess amounts under your policy for a higher premium. You can talk to us about our flexible excess options when you are taking out or renewing your policy.
If you have Comprehensive cover, our CarProtect policy will provide a small courtesy car (up to 1.2 litre), provided you use one of our recommended repairers. We cover up to 7 days if your car is repairable or 10 days if your car is damaged beyond economic repair or stolen and not recovered.
Once a Motor Assessor deems a vehicle to be a write-off, they will calculate the vehicle's value based on open market value. This will form the basis of the settlement. There are two categories for write-offs:
Beyond Economic Repair:
A vehicle is classed as Beyond Economic Repair when the cost of repair is financially unviable.
End of Life:
A vehicle will be deemed End of Life when the extent of damage means that it's not possible to return the vehicle to a roadworthy condition. We are legally obligated to ensure that such vehicles are disposed of by an authorised garage.
Personal property is covered up to a limit of €400 where you have Third Party Fire and Theft cover or Comprehensive cover. We will cover personal items in your car including childcare accessories, handbags, sports equipment and mobile electronic devices.
No cover is provided for cash, credit cards, cheques or business goods.
No. Cash is not covered when stolen from your vehicle.
Yes. We will pay the cost of delivering your car to and from a repairer following damage. The most we will pay is €250 for any one claim.
If your car is bought brand new and damaged beyond 60% of its list price within the first 12 months, we will replace it with a new car, provided there is less than 50,000 km on the odometer.
If your keys are stolen from your home or hotel room following a break-in, we will cover the replacement costs of stolen keys, car locks and alarm up to €750 for any one incident. There is no cover for lost keys.
We will pay associated fire brigade charges connected with a valid claim up to €2000.
Yes. If you have a comprehensive policy, we will cover accidental damage to your windscreen/side windows. This is an optional extra on Third Party Fire & Theft policies (check your policy schedule to see if Windscreen and window glass cover is active).
You will not have to pay an excess and there will be no impact on your no claim discount (NCD).
Policy limits apply where an approved supplier is not used (€223 for a replacement, €30 for a repair).
No. We do not cover depreciation, wear & tear, mechanical or electrical failure, destruction by a public authority, punctures or tyre damage from using brakes.
If you have a valid damage claim where the insured driver of your car is not at fault and the other vehicle has been identified and is not insured, the damage to your car will be covered and your no claim discount will not be affected.
An optional extra is an additional benefit that you can choose to add to your CarProtect policy. You do not have to purchase this as part of the main product.
You can choose from the following optional extras on the CarProtect policy, subject to underwriting acceptance critieria:
- No claims discount protector
- Step-back no claims discount protector
- Driver accident protection
- Car breakdown assistance
- Comprehensive driving of other cars

- 70% back to 65%
- 65% back to 65%
If you have a third claim in this period, your NCD will reduce to zero. This cover is only available if you have 5 or more years NCD.
This benefit will only apply to your policy if it is recorded in your schedule. If it is not recorded in your schedule, no cover will apply.

- 75% back to 55%
- 70% back to 55%
- 65% back to 55%
- 55% back to 35%
If you have a second claim in this period, your NCD will reduce to zero.
This protection is only available if you have 3 or more years NCD.
This benefit will only apply to your policy if it is recorded in your schedule. If it is not recorded in your schedule, no cover will apply.
With driver accident protection we will pay one of the following benefits where you or any insured driver is injured as a result of an accident while driving your car:

Total & Permanent loss of sight in one or both eyes
€15,000
Loss of limb

Hospital expenses
Up to €350 per week and €3,000 in total
Medical & Physiotherapy expenses
Up to €1,000
Excludes accidents not reported to An Garda Síochána, drivers using alcohol or drugs and suicide.
This benefit will only apply to your policy if it is recorded in your schedule. If it is not recorded in your schedule, no cover will apply.
With car breakdown assistance we will provide round-the-clock driveway and roadside assistance following a mechanical breakdown or accident, in both Ireland and the UK.
The protection provides one hour's free labour at the roadside, your home or place of work if the car can be repaired where it is. If not, we'll cover the cost of towing it to the nearest competent repairer or to your own garage, whichever is closer. If repairs can't be carried out at the roadside and you're more than 30km away from home, we'll arrange for the completion of your journey within Ireland. See policy document for limits which apply.
The policy excess will not apply to these claims and there will be no impact on your no claim discount.
This benefit will only apply to your policy if it is recorded in your schedule. If it is not recorded in your schedule, no cover will apply.
With comprehensive driving of other cars we will provide you with comprehensive cover to drive other cars on the island of Ireland. You can purchase this cover as an optional extra if Third Party Driving of Other Cars is standard on your policy and you have a five-year no claim discount. This benefit will only apply to your policy if it is recorded in your schedule. If it is not recorded in your schedule, no cover will apply.
You don't need to contact us before driving someone's car under this cover, but you need to be aware of the following conditions.
So long as you are not entitled to cover under any other policy, the cover provided under:
- Section 2–Loss or damage to the insured car, and
- Section 3–Windscreen and window glass, will also apply while you (excluding any other insured driver) are driving a private car other than the insured car on the island of Ireland, provided:
