We have a range of cover options for you to choose from, depending on your individual needs. Whether you need buildings and contents, contents- only or just buildings cover, we have the right cover for you.
Building and contents, this is the most comprehensive cover. The cover includes the private home, domestic outbuildings, fixtures and fittings, contents and personal belongings.
While home insurance is not a legal obligation, you may find that you have to take out home insurance as part of the mortgage process if you’re buying a house in Ireland.
The building sum insured is based on the rebuild cost of the private home. While not a requirement, contents insurance is also highly recommended to protect your contents and personal belongings in the event of accident or claim by an insured event.
In Ireland, while home insurance is not a legal obligation, but it may be a condition of any mortgage which may be taken out on the property.
To get a home insurance quote you will need to provide detailed information about yourself and your private home. The information below is an example of what you may be asked to provide.
- Property information: This includes your name, date of birth, email address, contact telephone number and claims history for the last five years.
- Your personal details: You will need to provide the address of the property to be insured, the Eircode, and the rebuild cost of your home and domestic outbuildings, along with the value of your contents and personal belongings.
- The property type: (e.g., detached, semi-detached), construction type (walls, roof type), and year of build. A crucial detail is the rebuild cost, (which is the cost to rebuild the house from scratch, not the market value).
- Coverage preferences: You will need to specify whether you want buildings and contents or buildings only or contents only.
For contents, you'll need to estimate the total value of your contents and personal belongings and list any high-value items separately. You may have the option to add on additional cover, such as accidental damage or "all-risks" cover.
To calculate how much home insurance cover you need, you must consider two main components:
Buildings insurance: This should cover the full rebuild cost of your private home, not its market value. The best way to estimate this is by using the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) House Rebuild Calculator. You should also add the cost of rebuilding any unique features or other structures like a garage or shed. For complex or older homes, a professional surveyor's valuation is recommended.
Contents insurance: This should cover the cost of replacing all your contents and personal belongings with new items. The best way to calculate this is to go through your house room by room, creating a detailed inventory and estimating the current value for everything you own, including furniture, electronics, clothing, and other valuables.
You should insure your home for the
You should make an additional provision in setting your “sum insured” for costs in removing debris after a loss and architects’ fees, as well as additional costs in rebuilding to current construction and local authority regulations. The Society of Chartered Surveyors issue an annual guide in respect of home reinstatement. For more information visit its website, www.scsi.ie.
