Modern agriculture is increasingly dependent on the use of machinery in order to carry out tasks in the most efficient way possible. HSA statistics show machinery accounts for 8% of fatal injuries on farms.* Machinery is also a significant cause of serious injuries on farms.
Unguarded parts, poor mechanical condition, inexperienced operators, human error, rushing, poor vision and lack of concentration are the main causes of machinery accidents. With this in mind particular attention should be given to ensuring that machinery is maintained in good condition and only operated in a safe manner by competent persons.
