Livestock Safety

It is estimated that over 40% of all farm accidents, (fatal and non-fatal) involve livestock*. 18% of all farm fatalities are caused by livestock**.

While many accidents are associated with the handling of bulls, most occur during routine tasks such as herding, loading, drenching, vaccinating, testing and handling cows at calving. Cows with calves pose a significant risk, accounting for 35% of livestock related fatalities*.

Farmers should ensure that all livestock are handled in a safe manner and that safe handling facilities are always used. Before attempting to carry out work with animals, plan the task. Ask yourself, do you have a clear path for the animals, are facilities safe, do you need help?
